FASHION PAINTING with TRANSFERS For Fashion Garments and Home Decor Items Self-shaded / Black Line * Reusable 1. POSITION HELPFUL HINTS FOR CORRECT POSITIONING FOR FASHION GARMENTS Many self-shaded & line art (black outline) transfers offer a variety of designs in different sizes to fit a wide range of garments. To find the best size to fit your garment, follow these steps: • Lay garment flat on table. • Cut apart the transfer designs to try them out against garment. • Choose the design size most appropriate to your dress, skin or blouse. • Pin design to garment. • Try on a garment to see where placement falls when you are wearing it. • Check appearance in mirror. CUSTOM-FITTING TRANSFER You can CUSTOM-FIT most Fashion Transfers to any garment you choose to paint. Although necklines, sleeve lengths and styles may vary, by planning ahead you can position designs to fit perfectly. REDUCING DESIGN • USE THE SMALLEST ELEMENT Using only the smallest element in larger design to fit on collars, yokes or pockets, simply "cut away" all but the small area you have chosen BEFORE you transfer the design on by ironing it on. CUSTOM FITTING It's easy to custom-fit a large design around a neckline or on a sleeve. Lay garment flat and position design. Mark with a pencil any parts that should be eliminated and cut them away BEFORE you transfer 2. TRANSFER SUPPLIES NEEDED for transferring: Iron. Ironing board. Extra piece of fabric for ironing board. Scissors. Watch (with second hand) for timing. PREPARING GARMENT / LINEN FOR TRANSFER After choosing the garment/linen you want to paint, the following steps will make it easier to transfer the design: • Wash a new garment first to remove any "sizing" put in by the manufacturer. • Press garment to remove any wrinkles before applying any transfers. • Work on large flat surface (an ironing board or a padded tabletop). Page 2 of Transfer Use Product Guide (continued): PREPARING WOOD FOR TRANSFER It is preferable to use new, clean unfinished wood for your project. If not, prepare the wood by cleaning the surface to remove all wax and oil. Lightly sand the item. USING HOT-IRON TRANSFERS Important transfer tip: Self-Shading transfers will become lighter with each successive use. Begin by ironing only 15 seconds the first time. DO NOT extend the ironing time on the first use or you will transfer more ink than is needed and have a transfer that is too dark. Each subsequent transfer will require longer ironing times. Add 10 to 15 for each successive use. EASY TRANSFER TIPS • Set iron on "cotton" for most fabrics or the highest setting your fabric will tolerate. For synthetics like nylon, acetate, etc. you will have to use a lower temperature and longer heating times. • PRE-HEAT IRON FOR 5 MINUTES. • COVER ironing board with a protective piece of fabric or folded flat sheet. • Heat up area to be transferred with warm iron before applying transfer. • Pin large transfer in place. • Press iron down firmly, but do not drag it as you may unintentionally move the transfer and get “ghosted” double lines. • Hold iron on every part of the transfer for at least 15 seconds. Use a watch - DO NOT guess. • After 15 seconds, peek under one comer of the transfer to see the progress. Do not remove the entire transfer until you are sure that it is completely transferred. • Self-Shading transfers will naturally be lighter each time they are used. Allow 30 seconds for the second use and 40-60 seconds for the third use. ******************************************************* We hope you found this guide helpful.
